Gallery publications displayed on shelf

The gallery has released over 120 exhibition catalogues with newly-commissioned texts by leading art historians, curators, artists, and critics.

From the beginning, education has been fundamental to the mission of Michael Rosenfeld Gallery. In addition to welcoming school groups of all ages for lectures and programs, the gallery has commissioned numerous original texts by leading art historians, curators, artists, and critics. Since initiating a print program in 1992, the gallery has released over 120 exhibition catalogues presenting texts by such essayists as Hilton Als, David Anfam, Debra Bricker Balken, Jonathan P. Binstock, Jessica Bell Brown, Connie Choi, Stanley Crouch, Ruth Fine, Thelma Golden, Robin D.G. Kelley, Leslie King-Hammond, Whitfield Lovell, Courtney J. Martin, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Francis V. O’Connor, Richard J. Powell, Arlene Raven, James Siena, Lowery Stokes Sims, Marin R. Sullivan, Barry Schwabsky, and John Yau.

These fully illustrated, beautifully designed publications have received numerous awards of distinction for their contributions to the field of art book publishing, including the Independent Publisher’s Award (IPPY) for Outstanding Book of the Year for Martha Madigan: Vernal Equinox (2001) and the New York City Big Book Award in Fine Arts for Claire Falkenstein: Matter in Motion (2018). In 2021, Benny Andrews: Portraits, A Real Person Before the Eyes (2020) was chosen for display in the exhibition A Selection of African American Art and Artist’s Books at the Thomas J. Watson Library at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
